I don't generally post about religion here but lately I've been reading slacktivist's deconstruction of Left Behind (hint: not favorable nor short) and was reminded of a section of the Bible I need to remember. Because it both encompasses what I think is right with Christianity and wrong with many people who call themselves Christian: 1 John 4.

Verse 7: Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

This makes very much sense since meeting my lovely wife.

Verse 18: There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

God is love, not fear. He is forgiveness, not punishment.

Verse 20: If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

Anyone who uses the Bible to preach hate has forgotten this. Love your brother. Love your neighbor. God loves all his children, not the straight white people who go to your church. All races, all genders, all preferences, all religions.
